We’ve all had our fair share of bad roommates in the past. The worst roommates are people that we’ll never be able to forget. They may exhibit selfish or pedantic behavior regularly. Some of them are more extreme with disgusting hygiene or serious personal issues. But ultimately they’re all a nightmare to live with.

So today, we looked at some of the best tales about horrific roommates online. They’re extremely entertaining but it’s still a bit shocking that these horrible individuals co-exist (or try to) with other human beings in real life. Let this list serve as a warning to everybody because it’s a frightening world out there. With that said, sit back and have a little fun with these off-the-wall tales about the worst roommates.

There’s nothing worse than when somebody receives a precious gift but other people abuse it. One Redditor got his hands on an expensive bottle of whisky and planned to treasure it. However, his roommates had a different idea and proved that they were horrible human beings.

RandyJackson described: “Got a 30-year-old bottle of Scotch for a birthday present from his grandfather. The three worst roommates drank the whole thing. They said they would pay me back. Fast forward to 3 months later, they hand me a 30 pack of Coors. We’re good now right?”

Many of the worst roommates exhibit selfish behavior and don’t pull their weight in the house. People often share essentials like toilet paper and milk because everybody uses them. Sometimes they’ll take turns to buy it because it keeps everything fair. However, this Redditor had a fair complaint about the person she lived with.

Toebass wrote: “I used to live with someone who would only buy crappy cheap toilet paper when it was her turn, but would hoard for herself rolls of the good stuff me and my other housemate would buy.” This is horrendous behavior but there are people like that out there.

This person’s story isn’t as bad as other people’s but it shows how stupid their housemate was. It’s never convenient when a light bulb blows out, but at least it’s easy to change. However, one moron was incapable of doing this and decided to call a professional instead.

The Redditor wrote: “I had to work abroad for three months. I came home to discover the bathroom light bulb had blown just after I left. Roomie felt she couldn’t change it herself so she called an electrician. Electrician laughed at her and told her she could save a fortune and do it herself.”

It’s never great when a housemate brings someone else into the house without permission. However, it’s even worse when that person is a drug-dealing bum. One Redditor said that this was one of her worst housemates because it created a horrible living situation.

Ashley1018 said: “Probably the girl who dated the homeless drug dealer. He ended up moving in (without my permission) and started dealing out of our apartment (definitely without my permission). He also had the rankest boots I’ve ever smelled that he would leave in the living room.”

Pedantic and passive-aggressive people are a nightmare to live with because they create a toxic atmosphere. Unfortunately, one netizen said that one of her worst roommates dragged her into uncomfortable situations. This also put her under a lot of stress and pressure.

The Redditor described: “I had a roommate who would leave unjustified scathing, passive-aggressive notes for just everyone: our apartment neighbors, cars parked outside, and even our landlady. The kind of notes with overly-polite language, as well as randomly underlined and capitalized words. Always signed from both of us.”

Another person said that one of their worst roommates was a magician. He behaved in irrational ways because he always brought strange things into the house. This created tension between the other residents because his weird behavior made life difficult.

They shared their experience: “Of the many moments the odd one that I remember vividly was when he was about to leave the country for nearly two months. Before he left (hours before going to the airport) he filled the freezer with whole chickens. Then got really upset when we ate them to free up space.”

One Redditor hates “The Lion King” with a passion because of their former roommate. Some people read or listen to music because they struggle to sleep. Others will watch TV or movies but they should wear headphones if they’re sharing with another person.

This netizen wrote: “I had a roommate in college who could only fall asleep if he watched Disney movies at night. I had to listen to them every night for hours trying to sleep. And I now hate The Lion King with the passion of a thousand burning suns.”

Sometimes things are too good to be true as this person discovered. They agreed to share an apartment with a person without adding their name to the lease. It appeared to be a great idea until something went drastically wrong. Then they found themselves in a crazy situation.

“He was always cleaning,” The Redditor described. “It seemed pretty great until I came home from work one day. There was a pink note stuck to the front door that said we were being evicted because we hadn’t paid rent in three months. Turns out that cleaning was what he liked to do while high on meth.”

Nobody can dispute that menstruation isn’t a normal thing because it’s something that every woman goes through. However, some people are less hygienic than others and show a lack of consideration for the people they live with. Check out the following situation because it is disgusting.

HeadlessPigeons described: “I had a roommate who (among other disgusting things) repeatedly left blood on the toilet seat when she was on her period. She also left her bloody pads sitting out. One time she left one on the radiator and it melted down to the metal.”

One of the worst roommates on this list decided to binge on drugs and takeout instead of paying rent. This may seem like a good life but it created a huge problem for his housemates. The situation was crazy because he ran away from the problem, leaving them high and dry.

Double_Ewe wrote: “he was responsible for collecting our rent payments and turning in the rent check to management. instead, he spent two full months’ rent ($4100) on cocaine and take-out, then disappeared when the eviction notice was posted on our door.”

Here’s another tragic whiskey story that’s almost worse than the previous one. At least then they acknowledged that they committed a heinous act. But this roommate attempted to trick this Redditor into thinking that nothing was wrong. Read on to discover the heinous truth about the situation.

ConfusedSquirrel explained: “Got a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue for my birthday from a friend. I went out of town. Roommate proceeds to drink half the bottle and then fill it up with water like I wouldn’t notice. And then dared to lie about it and continues to till this day.”

One of the biggest gripes that people have about their roomies is that they don’t clean up. It’s less of an issue when it’s their bedroom because that’s a private space. But it’s a different story when it comes to common areas and shared appliances because these affect everyone.

“My old roommate always used the same pan for eggs and never cleaned it,” Quetzel wrote. “For an entire year, this pan was caked with eggs and just sat on the stove (which was also covered in egg splatter.) Even if I cleaned it for him, it would be back on the stove the next day.”

Some of the worst roommates are also delusional people with no idea about how the world works. Here’s a weird situation that makes no sense but irritated the other residents. Nobody wants to deal with someone who is this much of a moron because it’s hard work.

“My current roommate uses the dishwasher as storage space,” they wrote. “He’s perpetually surprised when his dishes are cleaned and placed in cupboards as if that’s not a normal thing that someone might do when you put dishes in the dishwasher.”

One of the worst roommates had a coffee prohibition in their shared apartment and refused to budge. The normal person observed this but kept coffee creamer in the refrigerator because they put it in hot chocolate. However, this led to a very dumb confrontation about caffeinated liquids.

The Redditor described: “I laughed in his face and then tried to explain what was and wasn’t coffee… He was naive, humorless, and incredibly uninformed, but all things considered, could have been worse.” Imagine if he spiked his roommate’s dinner with coffee powder.

Cleanliness is a common source of tension between housemates because people have different standards. But one of the worst roommates took this to the extreme because she had no chill at all. She also made life a nightmare for the others when they were in the kitchen.

“She’d literally freak and scream and clean up after you while you were cooking,” Accentmarkd wrote. “I’d cut vegetables and be putting the first part into a pan, and she’d walk over furious that I’d left the cutting board out and messy for her to clean up. I’m literally still using it.”

It’s safe to say that heavy metal music is an acquired taste. Some people adore it but the reality is that many others despise it and don’t think that it’s real music. However, there is also a time and a place to blare it out when others are around.

Unfortunately, one of the worst roommates on this list didn’t get this memo. Jintumus described: “He listened to heavy metal music to ‘fall asleep’ without freaking headphones. I couldn’t last more than 2 nights.” This is selfish behavior regardless of the music genre because the person couldn’t sleep.

Another situation that causes problems is when roomies have different schedules. It can be uncomfortable to live with somebody who works at night because it changes the dynamic of the house. Suddenly, they want everybody to be quiet during the day when they’re sleeping.

The Redditor wrote: “My roommate sleeps all day and is up all night…opposite of me. She cooks intricate meals at 3 am sometimes and my dog goes crazy in my room wanting out. Drives me nuts.” This is a horrible situation because there isn’t a clear resolution.

Everybody knows somebody who is untidy or a bit of a pedantic neat freak. This creates a clash of personality but it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. However, there are extremely crazy people out there and they make the worst roommates imaginable.

One Redditor described their toxic living situation: “He freaked out and threatened multiple people, saying he would hack their computers and destroy their lives. Eventually, someone told him his iPad was in one of my friend’s rooms. He went inside, grabbed the guy, put a knife to his throat, and asked him where the iPad was.”

If somebody spends their entire time in the bar it’s a safe bet that they’re either very rich or have almost no money. One of the worst roommates fell into the latter category. The other problem was their lack of hygiene because they carried a disgusting smell.

“In the year I lived with him, he cleaned his room once,” the Redditor wrote. “That one time sent a wave of stench through the apartment after he awakened it from its slumber. This was also the type of guy who complained about not having cash, or constantly felt sick, but chose to spend most of his nights at the bar.”

It’s difficult to appreciate the levels of pettiness that exist in this world without living with random people. One person explained that a standard fall-out resulted in extreme consequences for her house. This is a wacky situation but it’s also quite funny.

“A roommate and I had (what I thought was a minor) falling-out,” this Redditor described. “When she left (with no warning, in the middle of the day while I was at class/work), she took the fridge. Not because she needed it, but because she didn’t want us to have it.”

It’s not unusual for housemates to have a cleaning rota because it keeps things fair. However, if one person has a bunch of guests over or cooks an extravagant meal, then they should wash up. Unfortunately, this Redditor’s roomie disagreed and created tension between them.

“My roommate once asked for the place to herself for a romantic evening with a chef she was dating,” Raemoondo wrote. “He made her a huge seafood dinner. When I came home the next day, there was a huge pile of dishes in the sink. Her reasoning: it was my turn to do dishes.”

Anybody that lived on campus will have some bizarre stories about their worst roommates. It’s not uncommon for people to go off the rails in the early days because of freedom. Some freshmen can’t handle their drinks but everybody else deals with the consequences.

Rat_Queen revealed: “First night of college (and the first time she met my friend) she got wasted, came back to the room, tried to climb into my friend’s bed (while said friend was in it), fell off, peed in the corner of the room, and puked on my friend’s bed before passing out in it. Never apologized or acknowledged it.”

This Redditor lived with a pedantic, religious person who made life miserable for everybody else. Meanwhile, her cleaning methods left a lot to be desired because they didn’t work. In the end, the other residents cleaned their dishes again because she couldn’t do it right.

“I had a roommate who was extremely conservative,” they wrote. She was also VERY frugal. She insisted on doing the dishes every night, but would only use 1 drop of soap for the entire load. It got to the point where it became a habit to pull “clean” dishes out of the cabinet and quickly wash them before we used them.

It’s very common for Americans to share rooms on college campuses but there is one dealbreaker. We’re not talking about hygiene levels or their personality. No, there’s nothing more important than if they snore or not because this changes the entire year.

Non_Polar described: “He snores. Actually, I’m not even sure if that’s snoring. It sounds like someone’s choking him by stuffing Hot Cheetos down his throat but he’s satisfied with that and just eats all of that shit up. I literally had to invest in some earplugs.

A nice personality doesn’t guarantee that somebody will be easy to live with. Many people have incompatible hobbies and interests that ruin the lives of their roomies. Music polarizes housemates especially if one of the people is a musician.

MFWater told their story about one of their worst roommates. They wrote: “I lived with a guy who drank rum like water and played the trumpet. But that’s just the beginning. Although he couldn’t play the trumpet. He would play the theme to “The Flintstones” but always got stuck on one note.”

Revenge is a dish best served cold or in the form of liver pate. A netizen had a crazy story about how one of their worst roommates reacted when she didn’t receive a party invite. Her levels of creativity deserve some kudos but she has a dysfunctional personality.

The Redditor described their crazy housemate. They said: “Had one girl who smeared liver pate all over the kitchen floor because we didn’t invite her to a party we had. When confronted about it, she tried to vacuum it up. The vacuum smelt so bad and had bits of pate stuck in the bristles on the nozzle.”

One problem that some people have is when other residents don’t respect public spaces. This Redditor described how one of their worst roommates left a printer sitting around for ages. She even had the gall to ask if her housemate would store it for her.

“She buys this printer and just leaves it in the living room for many weeks without ever being set up,” DJCyric revealed. “Finally she asks me to set it up, I say sure and do it. Well, she didn’t want it in her room (of course). Her room was absolutely filthy.”

There is something majestic about the sound of a church organ but most people wouldn’t want one in their house. However, one of the worst roommates thought differently and randomly bought one. It didn’t matter that none of his housemates wanted it because it was already there.

“He would do some really inconsiderate things, like one time he bought an organ,” a Redditor wrote. “Like one of those old electric organs they have in churches, and just stuck it in the living room. Never played it, just wanted to have it. Despite the fact, that our apartment was freaking tiny.”

Many internet users have stories about when their worst roommates almost killed them. Usually, this is because the person drank too much and tried to cook. This is a terrible idea because things go drastically wrong with potentially lethal consequences.

“My roommate heated up frozen macaroni in a pan over our gas stove when he was drunk,” ItsABaconTree revealed. “He went to his room and passed out on his bed. I woke up around 4 AM to the smell of smoke in my room, two doors over, and found the entire house filled with smoke.”

Sometimes people develop a problem when they live with foreign exchange students. It’s not because of their personalities but because they have different living expectations. This Redditor had a nightmare experience when they shared with a pair of Turkish women.

“Now, these girls were nice but they hated the cold,” BKBee explained. “We were living in Florida in the middle of summer where it’s hot and humid. They turned off the AC because they didn’t like the cold. Noooo. Bad.” It’s a difficult situation with no clear resolution.

Some people have disabilities and may be unable to contribute to their house in the same way as others. However, this isn’t an excuse for acting horribly. If they do it puts their able-bodied housemates in an awkward place because they must react.

This Redditor found themselves in a tricky situation because their roommate had a disability. They revealed: “I had a deaf roommate who used to steal my pillows because his one sucked. When I tried to tell him to knock it off he would pretend not to hear me. Finally, I threw his bedding out the window.”

One bizarre situation saw a Redditor develop a hatred of Robert Downey Jr. and his wife. That’s because their roomie had an unhealthy obsession with the Hollywood superstar. She made life very uncomfortable for others because of her irrational behavior.

“Susan was obsessed with RDJ. I mean actually obsessed to the point where everything she did revolve around him,” they wrote. “She even bought clothes that his wife wore so she could feel like they were married and like she was actually with him.”

Cleanliness is important but sometimes it’s important to cut housemates some slack. Allow them to finish eating first before forcing them to clean the kitchen. If they say they’ll wash up in the morning because it’s late then it’s ok if it doesn’t interfere with anybody else.

“I left a tiny bit of mess in the kitchen which I was going to clean up after eating,” Charwizz described. “He turned off the power in the flat and refused to turn it back on until I cleaned it up. It was dark by this time, so I had to do it all in the dark. I felt this was an immature reaction to something he could have asked me to do.”

One of the worst roommates ever left a souvenir behind before she even went on vacation. She traveled to Hawaii for a week but ensured that everybody remembered her. Her disgusting bowel movements blocked the toilet and create a horrible scenario.

The Redditor wrote: “I had a roommate who took a large dump and clogged the toilet right before she was leaving for vacation. As I walk in through the front door, she rushes out with her suitcase yelling “don’t go in the bathroom, I’ll fix it when I get back! She didn’t come back from Hawaii until a week later.”

Drinking enhances stupidity like gasoline on a fire. One Redditor almost died because of their roomie’s drunken cooking exploits. He decided that a paper plate and an oven made a good combination. In reality, they went together like Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

“Wake up in the middle of the night still drunk and high and there’s smoke filling my apartment,” TheAngrySheepHerder wrote. “Dude crashed on my couch after he heated spaghetti on a paper plate in the oven. Nearly burnt apartment to the ground.”

Nothing is worse than when somebody damages another person’s property and refuses to take responsibility. This Redditor described how one of their worst roommates destroyed their laptop before acting like it wasn’t their fault. This must have felt infuriating because there was nothing they could do.

“She left her curling iron on my laptop which melted the top through to the screen,” bdonn said. “The screen was totally ruined. I got home and noticed, and asked her if she had done it – I don’t even own a curling iron. She denied it, and said that it must have been, I quote, “a ghost or a burglar.”

Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to live with friends or close acquaintances. Sometimes life throws random people together with horrible results. One Redditor explained that their housemate, Chris, was a lunatic who also made things uncomfortable for everybody.

“Chris would talk to himself in different voices all day, all night,” Jawucka described. “Then the voices would stop and we would hear pounding. It legitimately sounded like he was repeatedly throwing himself against the wall. Then it would stop. Then it would start. Stop. Start.”

One of the worst roommates on the list paid for a room that they didn’t even use. Instead, they slept on the house roof but this almost had lethal consequences. We don’t know how this was legal but they continued to do it until they almost turned someone into a pancake.

“He would take my couch cushions on the roof to sleep on a wooden platform he built so we couldn’t use the couch,” the Redditor revealed. “One day the wooden platform blew off the roof and missed my friend by about two feet, it probably would’ve killed him.”

Laundry can be a tricky situation in a shared house because there may be limited drying space. One of the worst roommates on this list had a novel solution. It involved using a common household cooking appliance to radiate heat through his underwear.

“He also asked me if I would mind if he microwaved his underwear,” JordanSW wrote. “I obviously said no. Two weeks later I come into the kitchen and he’s looking shifty. The microwave bings, he pulls his underwear out and runs off.” This isn’t a nice image at all but at least one person was happy.

Everybody has a night where they drink too much and become a burden. But it’s unfair to do this all of the time and put pressure on other people. However, one college roomie failed to understand this and created a horrible situation for his fellow residents.

“One of my college roommates liked to party hard and get blackout drunk,” Youtubot wrote. “Then he would pass out in the shower with it running. He would do this repeatedly despite all our warnings that he might drown. Besides this is California we need our water, please don’t take 8-hour showers.”

Living with another person is the best way to understand how disgusting others can be. Everybody takes hygiene for granted but the reality is that some people don’t care. They may leave traces of themselves around the house and cause others to vomit.

This Redditor had a disgusting story about his experience because his nemesis left a horrible legacy behind. He wrote: “My old roommate moved out and left his dresser. The drawers were lined with toenail clippings. Still haven’t figured that one out.”

Many of the worst roommates share a common trope because they have terrible hygiene. Here’s another situation where somebody didn’t care about their body odor. But either they fail to consider how this affects other people or they don’t care at all.

“Roommate was obese and refused to shower so our room ALWAYS stunk,” this Redditor described. “I also caught her attempting to try on my clothes on many occasions without permission. She was literally twice my size and half a foot taller than me.”

One person thought that their roommate changed their sheets because he noticed that they were yellow. However, he suffered a massive shock when he realized that this wasn’t the case. The truth was darker and more disgusting as his roomie proved his disgusting attitude toward hygiene.

“I had a roommate who’s not really good with keeping his stuff clean,” the Redditor wrote. “He had a white bed sheet before, 3 months later I noticed his bed sheet was different because it was color brown this time. I told him “wow, finally you changed your bed sheets!” He replied “what are you talking about? I haven’t changed it.”

Most shared houses don’t allow residents to keep pets because they’re a source of tension. They may destroy the property or create a bad smell that infuriates everybody else. One of this Redditor’s worst roommates had a horrible attitude toward cleaning but her pets didn’t help.

“The girl who kept pet rats, which she never kept in their cage,” TerraBeastie wrote. “They s*** everywhere. She was so filthy I once watched her spill wine on the floor, look at it, and walk away. I finally cleaned it up a week later.” This is vile behavior but she didn’t care at all.

One idiotic roommate stole a Redditor’s bedsheets because he felt cold. However, there’s more to this idiotic story than meets the eye. It wasn’t as though they were living in Wisconsin in the middle of winter. Instead, they were in sunny California.

“I confronted him about this and he said “he was cold” so he needed some more sheets,” LeakX5 said. “But I notice the A/C had been on full blast and aimed directly at his bed. So I ask, “Why didn’t you just turn off the A/C?” “Oh, it didn’t really cross my mind. Sorry, bro.” Sneezes into my sheets, and hands them to me.”

It’s rare for an adult to wet the bed but some people have mental traumas that cause this. It’s unfortunate but livable as long as they try to deal with it. But if they don’t it will generate a horrible situation for everybody else and make them one of the worst roommates ever.

“She had a bit of a bed wetting issue and I didn’t want to make her feel bad about it,” 30-Year Scotch
