Sometimes, all it takes is one successful movie to make an actor’s name well-known around the globe. This is how many movie stars made their way to fame. But what happened after those sudden moments of success? While several celebrities we know and love continued their careers in numerous movies, many others did not. Their success was a fluke and many of them flamed out as one-hit wonders. We’ve curated a list of these one-hit wonders who disappeared after starring in movies we will remember forever.

You’ve seen Peter Ostrum in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He portrayed Charlie and fans fell in love with his charm. He was selected after the directors saw him acting in a play in Ohio. You’d think that after so much success, he’d star in another movie. In an interview, Ostrum said, “The film industry just wasn’t for me. The only time I ever considered it again was when I heard they were holding auditions to replace Peter Firth in Equus on Broadway. My thinking was that perhaps I should at least present myself. Getting the part would have been like lightning striking twice, but I didn’t get it. So, I continued in school with the same majors — animal husbandry and veterinary medicine.” After the film, he got married, had two kids, and got a job as a veterinarian. That’s a simple life compared to how it started and he chose what makes him happy (via The Sun).

As one of Hollywood’s most surprising one-hit wonders, Linda Blair shocked people with her stellar performance in “The Exorcist. She portrayed Regan MacNeil and earned a Golden Globe and People’s Choice Award. As a little girl, her head spun around and she vomited green bile all over a priest. It takes a special kind of actress to pull that off. But her performance caused some controversy since she was repeatedly put in dangerous situations. For example, she had to lie in a bed in freezing temperatures and endure two-hour makeup sessions that would sometimes burn her face. In an interview, the actress said, “The amount of pressure that came down on me wasn’t anything I was prepared for. Especially all the pressure the press put on me. They thought I had all the answers about faith and Catholicism. … It was probably the most awful thing you could imagine.” People believe the film was cursed, which is maybe why she never scored another acting job (via Looper).

The movie Dazed and Confused was a classic, which is why Jason London will always be remembered. In the movie, he portrayed Randall “Pink” Floyd. Though he was in a few films after the movie, nothing compared to his original performance. He did it so well, that nothing else he ever did again surpassed that success. Sometimes, you do so well at something that you don’t want to try it again and jinx it (via Reddit);

If you’ve seen the classic Harold and Maude, then you’re familiar with Bud Cort. He played Harold Parker Chasen, which was his most successful and memorable role in the world of film. He likely got his love for art from his father, who was a bandleader and a pianist (via DCAU).

Everyone has seen the classic The Wizard of Oz, probably more than once. The Wicked Witch of the West was someone we all feared. Whenever we hear the words, “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!” we run in the opposite direction. Margaret Hamilton played this infamous witch, and though she’s played in other films, she’s most well-known for her role as an evil villain. Other lines that stuck with fans around the world include “Who ever thought a little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?” And her final lines, “I’m melting! I’m melting!” (via Entertainment Time).

Henry Winkler played Fonzie in the show Happy Days, where he made his way into the eyes of Hollywood. And even though he’s also starred in Arrested Development and Parks and Rec, his roles have been short and successful. There was a moment in time he had the chance to play Danny Zuko in Grease, but he turned down the role. His appearance in other movies will never match his role on Happy Days, where his acting eventually flamed out (via Mirror UK).

The movie ‘Home Alone’ is a Christmas classic. There was nothing better than sitting around the TV with your family and playing one of the most famous holiday movies known to man. That’s where the one-hit wonder movie star Macaulay Culkin comes into play. He starred as Kevin McCallister, and though he did so well in the movie, there wasn’t necessarily much success following that production. After several failures following the Home Alone movies, Culkin said, “I’m done, guys – hope you all made your money, because there is no more coming from me.” After that, his life took a turn for the worse (via Belfast Telegraph).

This movie star made his way to fame with his performance as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars. People constantly thought he put on a less-than-stellar performance while he was on the big screen. But thanks to this role, he never really made another name for himself. There’s not a need to, though, because even playing this role is pretty remarkable. People weren’t too happy with his following performances either (via Ranker).

Everyone fell in love with the Sixteen Candles star Michael Schoeffling, who played Jake Ryan. Even though he played in other films following this one, none of them stuck like Sixteen Candles. He should just stick to Jake Ryan and leave it at that. He did open up a woodworking shop in rural Pennsylvania, which seems like the complete opposite of being a movie star, and now lives a simple life with a model wife (via Reddit).

There’s no one better than Mark Hamill to portray Luke Skywalker in ‘Star Wars’. Even though he continued onwards with voiceover work in Hollywood, it never matched his original success in Star Wars. And even if he wanted to become another famous character, there’s no real way he could have. Reality hit Mark when he started aging, which affected his ability to play Luke in ongoing roles. He said, “People say, ‘Oh, now you’re going to be able to do a whole series of Luke post-Return of the Jedi. I said, ‘I don’t think so. First of all, they don’t need to tell those stories, but if they do, they could get an age-appropriate actor.” Unfortunately, some things run their course, especially when it comes to movies (via Inverse).

Jim Varney was the talent behind the famed character Ernest P. Worrell. This fictional character was in a series of films and television commercials. No one knew Jim Varney’s name, but he was a talented writer, actor, and comedian. One other notable role he had was Toy Story’s slinky dog voice. Unfortunately, he died of lung cancer and was never able to continue with his acting career (via Yard Barker).

Child actor Danny Lloyd played Danny in the famous film The Shining. Danny didn’t necessarily love acting, and he was chosen because of his stellar concentration. After his success with the movie, he didn’t pursue acting anymore. Danny didn’t know he was in a horror film until several years later. Either way, this was his only role in the film industry (via Reddit).

People around the world fell in love with the American Pie series. Shannon Elizabeth portrayed Nadia in these famed movies as the international student no one could get enough of. Even though she played in other movies, nothing could top her performance in American Pie. She was unable to truly shake her title as Nadia. Now, she’s an animal activist, environmentalist, and launched her very own vegan jewelry line (via The Sun).

Everyone needs to watch “A Christmas Story” at least once in their lives, especially during the holidays. There’s no better way to celebrate the holiday spirit than with this heartwarming movie, where Peter Billingsley portrayed Ralphie. No one knows how the movie became a success, and he said, “Nobody had any expectations. It was this quirky, weird period movie about a kid who wants this BB gun, with all these dream sequences and fantasies. It’s kind of eccentric. It’s an odd tone, but clearly, the filmmakers got it right.” This is how Peter made his way to fame in the movie industry, though his acting career quickly flamed out after the fact and he became a producer instead (via ABC News).

There’s no way you can’t think about Jacob Black from ‘The Twilight Saga’ when you hear Taylor Lautner’s name. And even though he’s popped up now and again after the movie series, he was never as well-known as he was during Twilight. Not only did he fail to branch out after the saga, but his looks made it difficult for him to find another acting career, especially after his role in Abduction. Stephen Holden from the New York Times said, “I can’t recall another teenage star so opaque. If his physiognomy — recessed eyes that don’t seem to focus, a wide snub nose, and Elvis-y lips — conjure Neanderthal manhood after a cosmetic makeover, his boyish monotone with its utter lack of inflection suggests that he is an advanced robot simulating human speech without registering emotion or even comprehension.” That’s not a review anyone wants to receive, ever (via Nicki Swift).

If you’ve seen E.T. the Extraterrestrial, then you’re familiar with Henry Thomas. He played young Elliot, a boy who makes friends with the alien in the film. Following the film, people recognized him in the streets. His mother, Carolyn, said, “We had to call the authorities a few times. ET was a real sensation, some people were fanatical about it.” He did not appear in any other films, and because this one was such a hit, there was no matching his success. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Henry admitted, “But it was also very disruptive to my parent’s marriage. Our social life got weird. You get famous and suddenly every cousin that you never knew looks you up.” It affected his home life and it doesn’t sound like it was for the better (via The Guardian).

Gabourey Sidibe’s acting career skyrocketed in the film ‘Precious,’ which attracted fans’ attention around the world. Following that movie, she also starred in American Horror Story and Empire, though nothing will match her original role in Precious. Even though she struggled to find success after the film, she at least knows her talent. She said, “I have agency. I am comfortable with who I am, I know my voice, I know what I want to say to the world. And I know what I want to give to the world and what I want to give to myself, I know my artistry.” That’s all that matters in the end (via The Playlist).

If you’ve seen Kate Hudson’s film Almost Famous, then you’re familiar with Patrick Fugit who portrayed William Miller. In the movie, we follow Miller’s life as he learns lessons about growing up, relationships, and who he truly is as a person. Acting took a toll on Patrick’s health, and he fell into a state of pure exhaustion. He said, “We’re sitting there in a limo, and as soon as the sun rose and we had enough light, we had to start filming… But I could not stay awake and Billy Crudup would kick me when it was time for my lines. He kept telling me, ‘Patrick you’ve got to stay awake. It’s disrespectful to fall asleep when you’re off camera.’ Even when they turned the camera around and it was on me, I was nodding off.” Even though he played in other movies, nothing beats his original role in Almost Famous, where he stole the hearts of many people across the world. Surely, he did not want to experience that state of exhaustion again (via Variety).

Lilo Brancato Jr. made his way to Hollywood in ‘A Bronx Tale,’ where he portrayed Calogero Anello. He also starred in “The Sopranos,” but because he fell into a state of drugs, violent crime, and alcohol abuse, he wasted his talent. He’s a work in progress and is trying to reclaim his life after his days of being a criminal. He said, “You do the best with the hand you’re dealt — this is what I got now. I can’t change it.” Even though he can’t change the past, he can change the future (via The Ringer).

Holcomb portrayed Clorette DePasto in the movie National Lampoon’s Animal House, where she played the 13-year-old daughter of Mayor Carmine DePasto. And though she continued onwards to play in four more films Walk Proud, Mr. Mike’s Mondo Video, Caddy Shack, and Happy Birthday, Gemini, she never truly reached the success she had with her first film. And eventually, she succumbed to drugs and fell into a bad crowd, slowly disappearing from the movie industry for good (via Eighties Kids).

Peter Ostrum
