Movie fans assume that movie co-stars are best friends when they’re on set together. But the reality is that not everyone clicks and some co-stars actually hated each other. It might be as simple as a clash of personalities. Maybe one actor has a serious attitude toward their craft while others are more relaxed in their approach to the work.

Then there are times when people behave badly and their fellow cast members don’t accept it. Feuds bubble before boiling over and becoming the stuff of Hollywood folklore. So today, we’ll look at some of the most infamous back-stage tensions. It’s worth noting that sometimes stars channel this hatred into amazing on-screen chemistry as well, so check the feuds out here.

Murray is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors but it appears he has a darker side behind the scenes. Several stars complained about his on-set behavior including his Charlie’s Angels (2000) co-star Liu. Murray and Liu didn’t have a healthy relationship. He was allegedly abusive toward her but she wouldn’t bow down (via Deadline).

Reportedly, they had a dispute about a scene but Murray took it too far. The actress explained: “I stood up for myself, and I don’t regret it. Because no matter how low on the totem pole you may be or wherever you came from, there’s no need to condescend or to put other people down.”

Theron and Hardy were co-stars in the blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). However, the pair hated each other because of Hardy’s alleged unprofessional behavior. He once arrived three hours late for a shoot so Theron confronted him. But he reacted in a very aggressive way and this intimidated her. Several instances occurred throughout the filming process.

Theron told The Guardian about the toxic experience. She said: “I don’t want to make excuses for bad behavior, but it was a tough shoot. Now, I have a very clear perspective on what went down. I don’t think I had that clarity when we were making the movie. I was in survival mode; I was really scared s******s.”

Ford and Young were costars in the cult-classic sci-fi movie Bladerunner (1982). However, they hated each other and didn’t enjoy working together. Meanwhile, director Ridley Scott allegedly made things worse when Young refused to date him. She said that he took petty revenge by forcing her into an uncomfortable scene with Ford.

Young told Variety (via FandomWire): “He tried very hard at the beginning of the show to get me to date him, and I never would. I was like, nah. And then we do this scene, and I think it was Ridley. I think Ridley was like, ‘f*** you.’ I was thinking, ‘Why did this have to be like that? What was the point of that?’ and I think it was Ridley’s none-too-subtle message that he was getting even with me.”

Gosling and McAdams starred in the iconic romantic drama, The Notebook (2004). The pair even dated for two years but their relationship didn’t survive the tests of time. Furthermore, they reportedly clashed several times during the filming process. At one point, they hated each other so much that Gosling even tried to get McAdams fired.

Director Nick Cassavetes told VH1: “Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. Ryan came to me, and there were 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here. And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?’

These days, Reynolds is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. However, he’s not in Snipes’ good graces after they starred together in Blade: Trinity (2004). Reynolds was starting in the movie industry while Snipes was an established star. But Snipes couldn’t stand his casual nature compared to his method style.

Reynolds even inadvertently revealed this in the film. He told IGN: “There’s a moment in the movie where I look up at Jessica and I swear to God, I didn’t even know the cameras were rolling anymore and I say, ‘He hates me, doesn’t he?’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah.'” Snipes had no time for the future Deadpool star.

Dobrev and Wesley were two of the biggest names in The Vampire Diaries. This supernatural teen drama has legions of fans and remains popular today. Wesley explained they had a terrible working relationship in the beginning. He said: “When we first started shooting The Vampire Diaries, we totally clashed. We didn’t get along. Creatively, it just wasn’t in sync.”

Even though they hated each other in the beginning, they managed to turn things around. That’s good because it would have been a nightmare for the crew and their fellow cast members (via Cosmopolitan).

Carey is infamously one of the biggest A-List divas on the planet. She notoriously expects the world to bow before her. This doesn’t always work well when she meets someone who also has a strong personality. Ask Minaj, because the duo were judges on American Idol for one ill-fated season.

Allegedly, things became so bad between them that Minaj even threatened to kill Carey. She reportedly said: “If I had a gun I would shoot her (via Time).” Carey took these words seriously and hired extra bodyguards to beef up her security. In the end, they hated each other so much that they couldn’t keep working together.

Nolte and Roberts are Hollywood royalty but they didn’t have a good working relationship. They hated each other when they made I Love Trouble in 1994. The film didn’t receive a lot of love at the box office or from critics. Reportedly, the pair buried the hatchet but they went together like sodium and water.

Roberts explained her feelings about her former co-star (via Variety). She said: “From the moment I met him we sort of gave each other a hard time, and naturally we get on each other’s nerves While he can be completely charming and very nice, he’s also completely disgusting. He’s going to hate me for saying this, but he seems to go out of his way to repel people.”

Hathaway and Franco co-hosted the Oscars in 2011 but it went down like a lead balloon. Critics slated them for their lack of chemistry. Some said that Hathaway had too much energy while Franco had none. Furthermore, Hathaway revealed that Franco didn’t communicate well with her. This was at the height of the time when it was popular to hate Hathaway too.

Producer Jordan Rubin explained: “She showed up ready to play and committed 110 percent. And he was a great guy but often looked like he had just woken up from a nap. It’s almost like you’re showing up at a tennis court and one person decided that they were going to play in the U.S. Open, and the other wanted to play in jeans and just kind of hit a few balls (via Glamour).”

Reynolds and Kelly worked together in one of the most iconic movies ever, Singin’ in the Rain (1952). Reynolds had a miserable experience. Her co-star put her through a nightmare with his bullying and vile behavior. Kelly also directed the flick and abused his power toward the young actress.

Later in life, Kelly admitted: “I wasn’t very nice to Debbie. I’m surprised she still speaks to me.” Reynolds denounced him because he never encouraged her and there was also a very uncomfortable kiss. He crossed the line when he forced his tongue into her mouth. Eventually, they reconciled but Reynolds deserves immense credit for this (via Best Life Online).

Aniston and Mohr hated each other because of one unfortunate fact. Mohr won the role of Aniston’s co-star in the 1997 rom-com, Picture Perfect. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue but the problem was that he got it ahead of Tate Donavon. Donavon was Aniston’s boyfriend at the time and she wanted to work with her real romantic partner.

Mohr explained how Aniston made his life miserably on set (via The Things). He revealed: “I hadn’t done many movies, and even though they screen-tested some pretty famous guys, I somehow snaked into the leading role. The actress said, “No way! You’ve got to be kidding me!” Loudly. Between takes. To other actors on set. I would literally go to my mom’s house and cry.”

Ford is one of the biggest box office stars ever but he’s also notoriously grumpy. Some co-stars complained that he’s difficult to work with and also fell foul of Director Ridley Scott. The Star Wars actor appeared in Hollywood Homicide (2003) with Josh Hartnett. It’s easy to forget this movie exists because it was garbage. But their feud is the main reason we remember it.

Hartnett and Ford had a shocking relationship during filming. The former called his veteran co-star ‘an old fart.’ He also revealed: “There were times we would end up just sitting in the car when we were supposed to be doing a scene and neither of us would say anything for like an hour.” (via Pop Sugar).

Tisdale and Grabeel played siblings in High School Musical and had a sassy on-screen relationship. But they infamously hated each other in real life because of personality differences. Grabeel thought that Tisdale was too similar to her character. She also rubbed him the wrong way when they first met because she gave him audition notes.

“We were not close, we were not good friends,” Tisdale said (via Showbiz Cheat Sheet). “Let’s just be honest. It’s been 10 years… we can totally talk about this now. We hated each other. Like, I’m not kidding.” Luckily, the pair mended their fractured relationship and have a close bond today.

Game of Thrones was a cultural phenomenon that swept across the globe. Headey and Flynn were two of the fantasy drama’s longest-serving and most popular cast members. But they hated each other in real life because they had a messy break-up. That’s also why they refused to share scenes unless necessary.

One source told The Sun that Lena despised her ex-lover (via The Mirror). They alleged: “Lena and Jerome have not filmed together due to a bad breakup. They kept the full extent of it secret but it was a very turbulent relationship and it has been very awkward on set. Lena has opened up to her trusted friends. She appears to have a genuine hate towards him.”

Sometimes people don’t gel even if they want to. They try to be friends but they don’t have enough in common or their personalities don’t align. Many co-stars find this and it makes their job more difficult because they have to convince audiences that they have chemistry. Cyrus and Osment had this experience when they worked together on Hannah Montana.

In an interview with Seventeen, Cyrus explained her feelings toward her co-star. She said: “Emily and I tried to be friends, we really did, but it always ended in a fight. Our characters got along so well, why couldn’t we act the same in real life?” It’s one of those mysteries of life but they couldn’t overcome it.

Lohan has experienced massive highs and lows throughout her career. However, she probably didn’t expect to fall afoul of Ugly Betty star Fereirra. Lohan appeared as a guest star in the show’s third season. Unfortunately, her presence triggered Fereirra and the pair eventually hated each other.

One source alleged that Fereirra behaved unprofessionally toward the Parent Trap star on set. “America was mean to Lindsay. Producers give her too much power. Lindsay didn’t do the last two episodes because America didn’t like her and got her kicked off (via Page Six).” However, Fereirra’s defenders said that Lohan constantly arrived late and smoked heavily.

There’s little to remember about the 2008 movie Four Christmases. However, some celebrity fans recall that the film’s main stars hated each other. Once again, this was a major clash of personalities because Witherspoon was a serious professional. Meanwhile, Vaughn had a more relaxed attitude toward his work.

Reportedly, the director even cut a sex scene from the script because Witherspoon refused to even fake intimacy with Vaughn. It also created an unpleasant atmosphere on set because nobody wants to be in this environment. Unfortunately, it’s a more common situation than many people realize (via Far Out Magazine).

Fans hope their favorite TV show stars are best friends. But the reality is that many actors don’t get along. Gossip Girl co-stars Lively and Meester fit in this category because they didn’t vibe well at all.

It’s not that they hated each other but they didn’t form any connection. Once again this was a clash of personalities and that’s why there was always a cold dynamic between them. Nonetheless, it says a lot about their professionalism that they didn’t allow this to negatively impact their work (via Nicki Swift).

Star Trek was one of the most important TV shows ever with a diverse cast and groundbreaking themes. Sadly, the show’s star, Shatner, had a horrible relationship with his fellow U.S.S. Enterprise crewmembers. In particular, Shatner and Lieutenant Sulu, played by Takei, hated each other for decades. Takei thinks Shatner is a primadonna and says none of the cast liked him.

But Shatner defended himself after a 2022 interview with The Guardian. He said: “Sixty years after some incident they are still on that track. Don’t you think that’s a little weird? It’s like a sickness. George has never stopped blackening my name. These people are bitter and embittered. I have run out of patience with them. Why give credence to people consumed by envy and hate?”

It’s never a good idea to go through a divorce when co-starring as romantic interests. Unfortunately, that’s the situation that Murray and Bush found themselves in when they worked on One Tree Hill. The pair were young when they worked together on the series and married early.

Then it inevitably fell apart and created a lot of drama behind the scenes. “It was not a thing I actually really wanted to do,” Bush told Good Morning America. “Ladies have to learn how to take up space in the way that men are taught they are entitled to.” Luckily, they reconciled and have an amicable relationship today.

It’s difficult to think of two actors with more contrasting styles than Jones and Carrey. They’re both legends in their own right but unfortunately, they don’t get along. Maybe it’s too much to say that they hated each other because this was one-way traffic. Jones had no time for Carrey and even told him to his face.

They worked together on Batman Forever (1995) but didn’t vibe well. Carrey recalled how he met Jones in a restaurant one evening (via USA Today). He said: “He got up, kind of shaking, and hugged me and said ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ I was like ‘Wow, okay. Well, what’s going on man?’ And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'”

Glee was one of the most popular Disney Channel shows of the 2010s. It made stars out of its cast including Michele and Rivera, who had leading roles. But they hated each other behind the scenes. Fans couldn’t believe this but it proves that on-screen chemistry doesn’t mean that people like each other.

Naya’s father George explained the pair’s horrific lack of relationship (via New York Post). He explained: “There was always a fight between them. Always. Everybody knew and everybody saw it.” They hated each other but, at the same time, respected each other’s talent.” This didn’t make it easy for everybody else because it created a toxic atmosphere.

Luke and Lorelai had amazing chemistry in Gilmore Girls as they became two of TV’s favorite characters. That’s because of Graham and Paterson’s exceptional performances in the hit show. However, it’s even more impressive to learn that they didn’t like each other off the small screen (via Hello Magazine).

Their relationship didn’t have the vitriol of others on this list. They remained cool toward each other and maintained professional boundaries. Paterson admitted that he had a crush on his co-star in the beginning but realized it wouldn’t go anywhere.

Later we’ll talk about one of The Fast And The Furious’s most toxic rivalries, but let’s start with Gibson. Things took a dark turn after Johnson starred in a franchise spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. Unfortunately, the movie was a box office flop and Gibson took the opportunity to mock Johnson on Instagram.

He wrote: “I have to show my respects for one thing … He tried. Folks called me a hater … And attacked me for speaking out … Breaking up the family clearly doesn’t have the value that one would assume it does.” Reportedly, Johnson didn’t take this well and they hated each other for a while. Nonetheless, they repaired their bond and are friends (via Koimoi).

Sometimes overexposure causes relationships to break down. That’s what happened to Anderson and Duchovny on The X-Files. The legendary show ran for 11 seasons before it ended. They hated each other at various points because they spent too much time together. However, they bounced back and are firm friends today.

Duchovny spoke about how their relationship deteriorated. He said: “Familiarity breeds contempt. It’s nothing to do with the other person. All that fades away and you’re just left with the appreciation and love for the people you’ve worked with for so long. We used to argue about nothing, we couldn’t stand the sight of each other (via Hello Magazine).”

Cross once called Hatcher ‘The meanest woman in the world.’ The pair didn’t enjoy the best relationship. To be fair, Cross wasn’t the only member of the Desperate Housewives cast to dislike Hatcher. Allegedly, she was difficult to get along with and Eva Longoria described her as a ‘loner.’

The cast once took part in a Vanity Fair photoshoot but it didn’t go well. Cross refused to stand next to Hatcher and this didn’t go down well. Reportedly, there were many toxic incidents during filming and Longoria alleged that she experienced bullying (via Metro).

Everybody knows Baker and Daniels as the two most iconic droids in cinema. They played the cute robot duo C-3PO and R2-D2 in the Star Wars saga. They constantly bicker on-screen but the reality is that they maintain a close affection. Unfortunately, the actors hated each other in real life (via Express).

Baker called Daniels ‘the rudest man that he ever met.’ But in his autobiography, Daniels said that it was like working with a bucket because Baker’s character never spoke. He said that he had to create dialogue in his head and that it was a massive challenge to pretend he had a relationship with his co-star.

Many people thought that Sheen lost his power when Two And A Half Men fired him. But the tables turned when he worked on another TV show, Anger Management. Blair was his co-star but she became impatient with him because he always arrived late. She complained about him to the crew and production team (via Best Life).

Sheen discovered this and didn’t take it kindly. He instantly demanded that the executives fire her or write her out of the show quickly. In the end, he got his way and she didn’t return for the next season. Blair and Sheen hated each other because they had completely different attitudes. Unfortunately, though, he was the star and she paid the price.

Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
